Living in Awareness

I watched a movie that I enjoyed but soon it was over. I enjoyed my meditation but that didn’t last long. I dreamt in the night that felt so real but it ended at first light.

I got up this morning with the realisation that everything I experienced yesterday, both in the waking and dream state, was temporary and constantly changing. Appearing so real and significant in that moment, yet turning out to be illusory and insignificant soon after.

I dwelled upon this contradictory experience of real and unreal separated by the veil of time. I wondered if anything was actually real in life? Is life just a melange of transitory experiences in the eternal womb of time?

The answer came from the depths of consciousness. This world is a temporary and impermanent manifestation of consciousness. As such all thoughts, communications and experiences by their very nature are fleeting and transitory. They are much like shooting stars; appearing real when visible and unreal when they disappear.

However, there is something that is observing, experiencing and witnessing all the thoughts, words and actions. It is the ‘I’ that is ever present in both the waking and dream state. It is the ‘I’ that enjoyed the movie, meditation and dream. While the experience was temporary the experiencer (I) was ever present.

This ‘I’ that is permanent is not the physical body. The physical body is limited and is subject to disease, decay and death. ‘I’ is the awareness within that is consciously witnessing, observing and experiencing.

The ‘I’ or the Self is like the butter that inherently exists in milk (world) and can be found only when the milk undergoes change.

Self Realisation is the state of experiencing permanecy in a temporary world. Only an ever-changing world can give birth to the changeless consciousness that is aware and alert at all times.

To realise, recognise and experience the awareness within (I-ness) is self realisation. It requires churn, contemplation and silence to connect with the awareness of our consciousness. Living a life of awareness at all times is the hallmark of a self realised person.
